Horned Nerite Snail

Horned Nerite Snails are eye-catching, ultra-efficient freshwater algae-eaters known for the small “horns” or spines on their shells that give them a rugged, battle-ready look. Their bold patterns—ranging from black and yellow stripes to spotted designs—make them one of the most visually striking Nerite varieties. Famous for their relentless algae-grazing habits, Horned Nerites keep aquariums clean by constantly scrubbing glass, rocks, plants, and decorations.

Peaceful, plant-safe, and highly active, Horned Nerites thrive in community and planted tanks. Their quirky horns, unique patterns, and nonstop movement add both personality and functionality to any aquarium setup.

Common Names: Horned Nerite Snail, Thorn Nerite, Bumblebee Nerite (pattern varies)
Size: Up to 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Color: Yellow, gold, or brown shell with bold black stripes or spots; small horn-like protrusions
Lifespan: 1–3 years with proper care
Tank Size: Minimum 5 gallons per snail
Temperature: 72–80°F (22–27°C)
Temperament: Peaceful, active grazer
Diet: Primarily algae; can supplement with algae wafers and blanched veggies

Care Tips:

• Ensure abundant algae or provide algae-based foods to prevent starving
• Keep the water line slightly below the rim—Horned Nerites are known climbers
• Use a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape attempts
• Maintain stable, clean water—these snails are sensitive to ammonia and nitrites
• Provide hard surfaces like rocks, driftwood, and glass for steady grazing

Ideal For:

• Tanks with persistent algae problems
• Community and planted aquariums
• Hobbyists wanting a unique-looking, low-maintenance cleanup snail
• Aquariums needing high-level algae control without risk of baby snails (eggs don’t hatch in freshwater)

Add a Horned Nerite Snail to your aquarium and enjoy exceptional algae control, striking shell features, and the unmistakable charm of their horned, warrior-like look—making them an unforgettable addition to any tank!

Fish Quarantine Process

At 10 Gallon Fish Tanks, we take the health of our fish seriously. Every fish we bring in undergoes a strict 2-4 week quarantine process to ensure they are free of parasites, fungal infections, and bacterial diseases before being introduced to our main tanks.

During this quarantine period, fish are treated with the “Med Trio” as needed:

• Paracleanse – Targets internal & External parasites like worms and protozoans. Things like fish lice, tapeworms, hole in the head, skin and gill flukes.

• Ich-X – Treats external parasites and fungus. Treats Ich and white spot disease.

• Maracyn – An antibiotic that combats bacterial infections, preventing issues like fin rot, skin redness, open wounds, swollen eyes etc.

This quarantine protocol ensures that every fish we sell are healthy, acclimated to Tennessee water, and ready to thrive in their new home.
